It would not be entirely amiss to say that morning foreshadowed what was to come: the endless splendour of nature.  Even in the humble surroundings of our sleeping place could the nature-lover find something for his city-tired eyes to feast on.

Quite typically, we almost came too late for the buses that were to take us to the start.  This was where I said my goodbyes and goodlucks to the boys who were in the shorter run, jumped into Rúnar's jeep and followed the bus to the start of the longer run.  The race offered two different runs; the shorter one being 13,7 km, while the longer one being 32,7 km.

The longer run started at Dettifoss, a waterfall whose majestic and breathtaking environment, together with awesome rock formations in the surroundings, provided a sharp contrast to the awful gravel-road towards it.  Nonetheless, the drive was well worth it, and, it must be confessed, the sights from the road were also quite beautiful.

After taking pictures of the start in this picturesque environment, I took the jeep and drove like a madman towards the finish line.  My original plan was to get pictures of the longer run at three different places and the finish of the shorter run.  This turned out to be unwarranted optimism.  Driving from Dettifoss simply took too long, so all the pictures I could get were from the start and the finish of the longer run.

Snatak achieved a terrific victory in the longer run, surprising even himself, as he had signed up merely thinking of having fun.  It did not detract from his feeling of exultation that his mother's sister, Katrín, organized the event, and she was naturally overjoyed to see her little nephew breast the tape.

After the run we all felt a great need to rest our weary legs, which we did in good company at a dinner party at Katrín's house that night.  Hospitality among people in the country is fabled in Iceland, and this night did nothing to change our opinion in that department.  It was, therefore, a group of tired but satisfied heroes that climbed into their beds that night.
